Gunapadam - Marunthiyal (Mooligai & Thathu, Vilanginam) & Maruthuvathavaraiyal (Medicinal Botany)
Gunapadam plays a major role in our Siddha system and is one of its core departments. This subject includes Mooligai (herbs), Thathu (minerals), and Jeevavaguppu (animal origin substances). It provides detailed knowledge of various herbs, their therapeutic actions, and identification techniques. The laboratory is equipped with necessary instruments, chemicals, and glassware. Students are trained in mineral and animal-based drugs, learning about their properties, physiological effects, absorption, metabolism, excretion, and usage according to Siddha texts. Training also includes purification methods and the preparation of Siddha medicines. Our department houses a fully equipped pharmacy and pharmaceutical lab to support student learning. Students are encouraged to explore entrepreneurship in medicine production, and we organize industrial visits. The department maintains a botanical garden with over 300 medicinal plants on campus.\r\n\r\nMedicinal Botany (Maruthuva Thavaraiyal) is the study of the plant kingdom with a focus on medicinal plants and their ecological context. The curriculum covers the history and importance of flowering and non-flowering plants, plant biology, anatomy, ecology, plant tissue culture, and plant pharmacology. The department has dedicated classrooms and lab facilities for both teaching and research.
